Better Votes: Our Five Proposals
1. Every Vote Counts: Proportional Representation
Right now, the majority of votes don’t count in deciding who rules us. A more proportional system of voting would ensure that political power reflects the full spectrum of public opinion at the local and national levels rather than a small subset of it.
We propose:
- Reforming the voting system to a form of proportional representation (PR).
2. No Profit in Politics: Limit Money and Corruption
A fair democracy requires safeguards, such as donation caps and sensible party spending limits, to stop money from buying access and influence and from setting government policy.
We propose:
- That the £100,000 cap be extended to all donors, not just for donations from overseas residents, but also for those based in the UK.
3. A New UK Constitution
We need a multi-national conversation about the United Kingdom and our collective and individual rights, where a citizen-led process sets out the rules and aspirations for a good life and fair society.
We propose:
- Reforming democratic institutions: an elected House of Lords, further devolution, greater use of deliberative processes such as citizens’ assemblies, deeper and meaningful devolution of power and transparent decision-making — to ensure that power is accountable and contestable.
- More funding and decision-making power locally, with participative infrastructure for neighbourhood-scale decision-making.
